When they arrived, Parkes and Clarinda had very little money. He had to sell his things to survive. First, he worked as a laborer for a wealthy man named John Jamison. He earned 25 pounds a year and some food. Later, he worked in Sydney at a shop and an engineering firm. He eventually got a steady job with the Customs Department. His job was to inspect ships to stop smuggling.

Parkes became very interested in how the government worked. He used newspapers to share his ideas with many people. He started a daily paper called the Empire in 1850. He wanted people to have a voice in their own land. Parkes fought to stop the sending of convicts to Australia. He also wanted more people to be allowed to vote. He believed in fair rules for everyone. These early ideas helped him become a famous politician.

As a leader, Parkes made many big changes for the people.

He helped start public schools for children. He passed the Public Schools Act in 1866 to help teachers. He also wanted to bring trained nurses from England to help the sick. Parkes served as the leader of New South Wales many times. He helped build new railway lines and telegraph lines. These things helped people travel and talk to each other more easily.

His most famous work was helping the colonies join together.

In 1889, he gave a great speech at Tenterfield. This speech encouraged people to form one single nation. He even suggested the name "Commonwealth of Australia." This idea led to important meetings in 1890 and 1891. Because of this, people call him the "Father of Federation."
