He is most famous for being the "Father of Federation." This title refers to his work to unite the six separate Australian colonies into one nation. He served as the Premier of New South Wales multiple times. A Premier is the leader of a colonial government. He was a self-educated man who rose from a laborer to a powerful statesman.

Parkes was born in Canley, England, in 1815. His father, Thomas Parkes, was a small-scale tenant farmer. Because he had little formal schooling, Parkes had to teach himself through extensive reading. This passion for learning even led him to write poetry. In 1836, he married Clarinda Varney. After experiencing personal loss and difficult times in London, the couple emigrated to Australia. They arrived in Sydney on July 25, 1839, aboard the ship *Strathfieldsaye*.

Life in the colony was difficult for the young family. Upon arrival, they had only a few shillings. Parkes had to sell his belongings to survive. He first worked as a laborer for John Jamison at the Regentville estate. He earned only £25 a year plus food rations. Later, he found a stable government job as a tide waiter. In this role, he inspected merchant vessels to prevent smuggling. This position helped improve his financial situation, though he still struggled with debt.

Parkes eventually moved from government work into journalism and politics. He owned several newspapers, including *The Empire*, which he founded in 1850. He used these papers to voice his political opinions. He was a strong opponent of convict transportation, which was the practice of sending prisoners to Australia. He also campaigned for universal suffrage. This is the idea that all adult citizens should have the right to vote. His work in newspapers helped him build a public reputation.

As a leader in the New South Wales Parliament, Parkes introduced many important reforms. He was a major supporter of free trade and public education. In 1866, he introduced the Public Schools Act. This law required teachers to have specific training and created a way to fund schools. He also worked to improve prisons and bring trained nurses from England to the colonies.

While he achieved much, his career also faced challenges. He dealt with political controversies and significant personal debt. At one point, his debts totaled £48,500.

One of the most significant moments in Parkes's career was his push for Australian Federation. On October 24, 1889, he delivered the Tenterfield Oration. This famous speech called for a convention to create a federal government. He argued that a federal parliament was needed to manage national tasks. During this speech, he also proposed the name "Commonwealth of Australia."

This oration led to a federal conference in 1890 and a Constitutional Convention in 1891. These meetings were the first steps toward the colonies joining together.

Parkes's influence shaped the foundation of the modern Australian nation. Although he died in 1896, his ideas lived on. The process of federation was completed in 1901, five years after his death.
