He served as Australia's second prime minister during three separate terms. Deakin is widely recognized as one of the "fathers of Federation." This means he played a vital role in uniting the separate Australian colonies into one country. His leadership helped establish the socio-economic framework that guided Australia throughout much of the 20th century.

Deakin's early life was marked by movement and diverse interests. He was born on August 3, 1856, in Melbourne, Victoria. His parents, William and Sarah Deakin, migrated from Britain to Adelaide in 1850. They moved to Melbourne later to follow the Victorian gold rush.

As a young man, Deakin worked as a schoolteacher and a private tutor. He also studied law and became a barrister in 1877. Although he did not graduate from university, he passed the matriculation exam at age 15. He was also a talented writer of poetry and plays.

His political career began in the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 1879.

Deakin held several high-ranking ministerial roles in Victoria. He served as the Solicitor-General twice and as the Chief Secretary. In these roles, he worked on important social reforms. He helped pass the Factories and Shops Act to regulate working hours and conditions. He also investigated irrigation in the United States. This research led him to introduce laws in Australia to nationalize water rights. These laws helped provide state aid for irrigation works.

In the 1890s, Deakin shifted his focus toward the movement for Federation. He served as a delegate to the Federal Conventions in 1891 and 1897. During these meetings, he helped draft the federal constitution. The constitution is the fundamental set of rules that governs a nation. Deakin was a skilled negotiator who often had to resolve difficult disagreements. He worked to ensure the federal government had strong taxation powers. He also lobbied the British government to adopt the new Australian constitution.

After Federation was achieved in 1901, Deakin became the first Attorney-General of Australia. He served in the ministry led by Edmund Barton. When Barton resigned, Deakin succeeded him as prime minister in September 1903. His first term lasted from 1903 to 1904. He returned to office for a second term from 1905 to 1908. During this time, he led the Protectionist Party. He often had to form governments by working with the Australian Labor Party (ALP).

He brought his supporters together with the Free Traders. This alliance was based on a shared opposition to socialism. This event changed Australian politics by creating a two-party system. It allowed Deakin to form Australia's first majority government. His final term as prime minister ran from June 1909 to April 1910. He considered this period to be his most productive time in office.

Deakin's influence extended to the very structure of Australian society. He was the principal architect of the "Australian settlement." This included several major policy areas. These were the White Australia policy, compulsory arbitration, and protectionism. He also supported state paternalism and a strong connection to the British Empire. These features shaped how the country functioned for many decades.

Deakin retired from politics in 1913. He suffered from a degenerative neurological condition that affected his health. He passed away on October 7, 1919, at the age of 63.
