He played a vital role in building the modern Labour Party. His life was defined by his devotion to workers and his efforts toward international peace. Colleagues often called him "Uncle Arthur" because of his integrity and calm nature. He was a transitional figure who helped move politics from older ideas toward new social goals.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1863, Henderson faced challenges early in life. His father, a textile worker, died when Arthur was only ten years old. This led the family to move to Newcastle upon Tyne in England. At age twelve, Henderson began working at a foundry. He eventually became an iron moulder, which is a person who casts metal. He also became a Methodist Local Preacher, which shaped his personal values.

Henderson’s political career began through trade unionism and local activism. In 1892, he became a paid organiser for the Friendly Society of Iron Founders. He strongly believed in arbitration, which is using a neutral person to settle disputes. He preferred talking through problems rather than using strikes. In 1900, he was one of 129 delegates who helped create the Labour Representation Committee (LRC). This group later became the Labour Party in 1906 after winning 29 seats.

As the Labour Party grew, Henderson held several major leadership positions. He was elected Leader of the Labour Party in 1908. He also served as the party's Treasurer starting in 1903. Henderson was a master of the by-election, which is a special election held to fill a vacancy. He was elected to Parliament through five different by-elections in various locations. This allowed him to return to political life even after losing general elections.

Henderson reached the highest levels of the British government during times of crisis. In 1915, he became the first Labour member of the Cabinet. He served as President of the Board of Education. During the First World War, he was a member of the War Cabinet. In 1924, he served as Home Secretary in the first-ever Labour government. Later, in 1929, he became the Foreign Secretary to help improve relations with the Soviet Union.

His time as Foreign Secretary was marked by efforts to maintain global stability. He supported the League of Nations, an international organization meant to prevent conflict. However, the Great Depression caused a massive political crisis in 1931. The government was divided over whether to cut unemployment benefits by 10 percent. When Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald formed a coalition with other parties, Henderson stayed with the main Labour Party. He led the party into a difficult election in 1931 where they won only 52 seats.

In his final years, Henderson focused entirely on preventing another world war.

Henderson's life connects the industrial working class to the highest halls of power. He helped create a party platform that lasted until 1950. This platform included ideas like a guaranteed minimum standard of living and the nationalisation of industry. His career shows how a worker can rise to shape the laws of an entire nation. He remains a key figure in the history of British social democracy.
