His leadership helped transform the political landscape of Britain. He became a central figure in how workers gained political power.

MacDonald's early life began in Lossiemouth, Scotland. He was born in 1866 to a farm labourer and a housemaid. In 19th-century Presbyterian Scotland, being born to unmarried parents was a social handicap. However, this was common in northern farming communities. In 1868, a Royal Commission found that about 15% of people were born out of wedlock.

This meant nearly one in six people shared a similar background.

He left school at age 15 to work on a farm. Later, he became a pupil teacher. In 1885, he moved to Bristol to assist a clergyman. He then moved to London in 1886. In London, he worked as an invoice clerk in a warehouse. He also served as a private secretary to Thomas Lough, a tea merchant. This role provided him with valuable experience in electioneering.

Through these jobs, he learned how political systems functioned.

MacDonald was deeply involved in socialist movements. He joined the Social Democratic Federation and the Bristol Socialist Society. He witnessed the Bloody Sunday protests in Trafalgar Square in 1887.

In response, he published a pamphlet titled "Remember Trafalgar Square: Tory Terrorism in 1887." He also cared about Scottish politics and the idea of Home Rule. He believed the "Anglification" of Scotland damaged its unique culture and genius. He used his writing to express these complex political theories.

His rise in the Labour Party was steady. In 1900, he became Secretary of the Labour Representation Committee. This group was the forerunner of the modern Labour Party. He negotiated the Gladstone–MacDonald pact with Liberal politician Herbert Gladstone. This agreement allowed Labour to contest seats without Liberal opposition. As a result, the party saw its first major breakthrough.

MacDonald led the government twice as Prime Minister. His first minority government lasted for nine months in 1924.

He led a second government from 1929 to 1931. This period was dominated by the Great Depression. To defend the gold standard, he proposed spending cuts. He formed a National Government dominated by the Conservative Party to do this.

This decision led to his expulsion from the Labour Party.

This political shift had massive consequences for the country. In the 1931 general election, the National coalition won a landslide victory. The Labour Party was reduced to a small group of about 50 seats. Many in the Labour movement called MacDonald a traitor.
