He was born in 1866 in Lossiemouth, Scotland. His father was a farm worker and his mother was a housemaid. Being born to parents who were not married was difficult in Scotland then. However, many people in farming areas lived this way. MacDonald left school when he was 15 years old. He worked on a farm before becoming a teacher. Later, he moved to Bristol and then to London to find new jobs.

MacDonald loved to learn new things throughout his life. In London, he worked as an invoice clerk in a warehouse. He also worked as a private secretary for a tea merchant named Thomas Lough. This job helped him learn how elections work. He even tried to study science at a college in London. Sadly, he became very tired and his health failed him. This meant he could not finish his science studies. Instead, he became a writer and a speaker. He used his words to share his ideas about how society should work.
