His leadership helped transform the political landscape of Britain. He became a central figure in how workers gained political power.

MacDonald's early life began in Lossiemouth, Scotland. He was born in 1866 to a farm labourer and a housemaid. In 19th-century Presbyterian Scotland, being born to unmarried parents was a social handicap. However, this was common in northern farming communities. In 1868, a Royal Commission found that about 15% of people were born out of wedlock.

In response, he published a pamphlet titled "Remember Trafalgar Square: Tory Terrorism in 1887." He also cared about Scottish politics and the idea of Home Rule. He believed the "Anglification" of Scotland damaged its unique culture and genius. He used his writing to express these complex political theories.

His rise in the Labour Party was steady. In 1900, he became Secretary of the Labour Representation Committee. This group was the forerunner of the modern Labour Party. He negotiated the Gladstone–MacDonald pact with Liberal politician Herbert Gladstone. This agreement allowed Labour to contest seats without Liberal opposition. As a result, the party saw its first major breakthrough.
