It is often called Labour for short. The party sits on the centre-left of the political spectrum. This means it includes social democrats and democratic socialists. It also includes people from trade unions. These are groups that look after workers. Currently, Labour is the governing party in the UK. They have held power since the 2024 general election.

The party works through many different local groups. It has branches in London, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

These branches can act on their own. Every year, the party holds a big meeting in the autumn. This is called the Labour Party Conference. At this meeting, delegates from local groups and unions vote on new ideas. Senior leaders also stand on a platform to speak to the crowd. This helps the party decide its future goals.

Labour has a long history that began in the late 1800s.

The Labour Party is a major political organization in the United Kingdom. It is one of the two primary parties in the country. Alongside the Conservative Party, it plays a central role in British governance. Politically, Labour sits on the centre-left of the spectrum. This position makes it an alliance of different groups. These include social democrats, democratic socialists, and trade unionists.

Currently, Labour is the governing party of the United Kingdom. This follows their victory in the 2024 general election. Keir Starmer has led the party since 2020. He also serves as the Prime Minister. Over its history, the party has formed twelve governments. It has produced seven different Prime Ministers.

The party operates through a structured system of meetings and branches. It includes semi-autonomous branches in London, Manx, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. In Wales, Labour is the largest party in the Senedd. It is also the only party in the current Welsh government.

Every year, the party holds a major event called the Labour Party Conference. This meeting takes place during the autumn. Delegates from local parties and trade unions attend this event. They use the conference to vote on official party policy. Senior party figures also address the audience from a central platform. This process allows different members to help shape the party's direction.

The roots of the Labour Party go back to the late 19th century. It emerged from the trade union movement and various socialist groups. At that time, many urban workers were gaining the right to vote. This happened through laws passed in 1867 and 1884.

Different trade unions were growing in industrial areas. Some groups, like the Fabian Society, were made of middle-class reformers. Keir Hardie worked to bring these different groups together. In 1900, the Trades Union Congress sponsored a national conference. They wanted to create a single party to represent working people in Parliament. This group was called the Labour Representation Committee, or LRC. Ramsay MacDonald served as its secretary.

The early years of the party involved significant political shifts. In the 1906 general election, the LRC won 29 seats. After this, the group officially renamed itself the Labour Party. Keir Hardie became the leader of the Parliamentary Labour Party.

In 1918, the party added Clause IV to its constitution. This committed the party to common ownership of the means of production. This term refers to the tools and systems used to make and distribute goods. After World War I, the Liberal Party began to decline. This allowed Labour to become the main opposition to the Conservatives. In 1924, Ramsay MacDonald formed the first minority Labour government. It lasted for 10 months and focused on housing and foreign policy.

Economic challenges often shaped the party's path to power. In 1929, Labour became the largest party in the House of Commons. They won 287 seats, but they did not have a majority.

The Great Depression soon caused massive economic trouble. In 1930, unemployment in the UK rose to 2.5 million people. This crisis led to a split in the party. In 1931, MacDonald formed a national government with Conservatives and Liberals. This led to his expulsion from the Labour Party. Labour suffered a large defeat in the 1931 election, winning only 52 seats. However, the party began to recover its strength by 1935.

After World War II, Labour achieved a major victory in 1945. The government led by Clement Attlee made huge changes to British life.

They enacted extensive nationalisation of industries. This means the government took control of certain businesses. They also established the modern welfare state. This included the creation of the National Health Service. Labour governed again under Harold Wilson and James Callaghan during the 1960s and 1970s.

Later, the party faced internal divisions. By the mid-1980s, the left wing of the party had been defeated.

The party has undergone several rebranding efforts to win elections. In the 1990s, Tony Blair moved the party toward the political centre. This period was known as "New Labour."
