He served as the 12th Prime Minister of Australia during two distinct periods. His first term lasted from 1939 to 1941. His second term was much longer, spanning from 1949 to 1966. This long tenure makes him the longest-serving Prime Minister in the nation's history. He was a lawyer by training and a skilled political leader.

Menzies was born on 20 December 1894, in Jeparit, Victoria. He was the fourth of five children in his family. His parents, James and Kate Menzies, were both born in Australia. This fact made him the first Australian Prime Minister with two Australian-born parents. His family had moved to Jeparit to run a general store. The town was very small, with only 55 people in the 1891 census. Menzies was proud of his Scottish heritage and his family's history.

This achievement funded his secondary education at private schools. He later attended the University of Melbourne to study law. He earned a Bachelor of Laws in 1916 and a Master of Laws in 1918. During his university years, he was known as an articulate and bright debater. However, some peers noted he could be unkind or arrogant in discussions.

After university, Menzies built a career as a leading lawyer in Melbourne. He specialized in constitutional law, which deals with the rules of government.

In 1920, he argued a landmark case for the Amalgamated Society of Engineers. This case helped define the powers of the Commonwealth government over the states. His legal success led to him becoming a King's Counsel in 1929. He eventually entered state politics as a member of the Victorian Legislative Council.

He resigned in 1941 after losing the support of his own party.

Following his resignation, Menzies helped found the Liberal Party of Australia. He became its first leader in August 1945. In the 1949 federal election, he led a coalition to victory.

He won seven consecutive elections during his second time in office. His leadership coincided with a period of economic growth and middle-class expansion. He used reassuring radio talks to connect with families across the country. He remained in power until he retired in January 1966.

His long government left a lasting impact on the Australian landscape. They oversaw the development of the capital city, Canberra. The government also expanded immigration schemes to bring more people to Australia. Menzies focused heavily on higher education and national security. Under his leadership, Australia sent troops to several conflicts, including the Korean War and the Vietnam War. These policies helped shape the modern identity of the nation.
