This achievement funded his secondary education at private schools. He later attended the University of Melbourne to study law. He earned a Bachelor of Laws in 1916 and a Master of Laws in 1918. After university, Menzies built a career as a leading lawyer in Melbourne. He specialized in constitutional law, which deals with the rules of government. In 1920, he argued a landmark case for the Amalgamated Society of Engineers. This case helped define the powers of the Commonwealth government over the states. His legal success led to him becoming a King's Counsel in 1929. He eventually entered state politics as a member of the Victorian Legislative Council.
