He used radio shows to talk to the people in his area.
As time went on, Fraser took on many different jobs in the government. He served as the Minister for the Army under Harold Holt.
Becoming prime minister was part of a very big and difficult event.
Fraser's time as leader changed how Australia looked at the world.
Malcolm Fraser was a significant figure in Australian history.
Fraser's political career began with a narrow defeat. In 1954, he ran for the House of Representatives. He lost the election for the division of Wannon by only 17 votes. He tried again in 1955 and won a landslide victory. At age 25, he was one of the youngest people ever elected to parliament. He used a weekly radio program called "One Australia" to connect with voters. This program helped him build a large following in his local area.
As he gained experience, Fraser moved into various ministerial roles. A minister is a high-ranking official in the government. In 1966, Harold Holt appointed him Minister for the Army. Following Holt's death, John Gorton became prime minister. Fraser then served as Minister for Education and Science from 1968 to 1969. He also held the position of Minister for Defence from 1969 to 1971. During this time, he studied international relations. He traveled to Washington, D.C. and Jakarta to meet foreign leaders.
Fraser's rise to the premiership involved a major political conflict. In 1971, he resigned from the cabinet. He claimed that Prime Minister Gorton was interfering with his responsibilities. This led to Gorton being replaced by William McMahon. Later, Fraser became the leader of the Liberal Party in March 1975. At that time, the government was led by Gough Whitlam. Fraser used the Senate to block supply to the Whitlam government. Supply refers to the money needed for the government to operate. This led to the 1975 Australian constitutional crisis.
The crisis ended when the governor-general, Sir John Kerr, dismissed Whitlam. This was a unique and controversial event in Australian history. Fraser was the only prime minister to take office because of a predecessor's dismissal.
Fraser's policies changed the social fabric of Australia. He was a strong supporter of multiculturalism. This is the idea that many different cultures can live together in one society. His government helped end the White Australia policy. He admitted large numbers of non-white immigrants to the country. This included many Vietnamese boat people.
In his later years, Fraser moved into international service. He worked with the United Nations and the Commonwealth of Nations. From 1990 to 1995, he served as president of the aid agency CARE. He also became a critic of his own party's direction. In 2009, he resigned his membership from the Liberal Party. Throughout his life, he remained active in global affairs.
Evaluations of Fraser's time in power are often mixed. Many people praise his commitment to multiculturalism. They also respect his opposition to apartheid in South Africa. Others debate the fairness of how he became prime minister. Some economists believe his government missed chances for major reform. Despite these debates, his impact on Australia is undeniable.
