In 1928, he finally won a seat in the House of Representatives for Fremantle. 
In 1941, Curtin became the prime minister. This was during World War II. Two months later, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and British Malaya. This made people in Australia very afraid of an invasion. Curtin knew Australia needed a strong partner for protection. He decided to work closely with the United States. He formed a close bond with an American general named Douglas MacArthur. 
Curtin led the country through the rest of the war in the Pacific. He made many big decisions about how the war was fought. He also helped solve problems at home. In 1943, his party won a huge number of seats in Parliament. This was a record for the Labor Party. Sadly, the stress of the war made him very ill. He died in office in July 1945.

Curtin's early life was marked by financial struggle and responsibility. He was born in Creswick, Victoria, on 8 January 1885. His parents had emigrated from County Cork, Ireland. His father worked as a police constable and a prison warder. However, his father suffered from chronic illnesses and was often unable to work. This forced Curtin to leave school at age 13 to support his family.
Before entering Parliament, Curtin worked many different jobs. He was an office boy, a copy boy, and a potter's apprentice. He also served as an estimates clerk for a manufacturing company. These roles helped him understand the lives of working people. He became deeply involved in the labor movement in Melbourne. He served as the state secretary of the Timberworkers' Union from 1911 to 1915. 
Curtin's political journey involved many challenges and shifts. He moved to Perth, Western Australia, in 1917 to edit the *Westralian Worker*. In 1928, he was elected to the House of Representatives for the Division of Fremantle. He remains the only Prime Minister to represent a constituency in Western Australia. In 1935, he won the leadership of the Labor Party. He defeated Frank Forde by only a single vote. 
In October 1941, Curtin became Prime Minister through a minority government. Shortly after, the war in the Pacific intensified. Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor and British Malaya caused great fear in Australia. Many citizens feared an imminent Japanese invasion of the continent. Curtin realized Australia could not rely solely on the British military. He decided that a close alliance with the United States was necessary for protection.
To strengthen this alliance, Curtin worked with American General Douglas MacArthur. 
Despite his political successes, the pressures of leadership took a physical toll. Curtin suffered from ill health due to the intense stresses of the war. He died in office on 5 July 1945. His successor, Ben Chifley, implemented many of Curtin's plans for post-war reconstruction.
