Rhodesia is a country in Africa that is now known as Zimbabwe. Smith served as the Prime Minister of Rhodesia from 1964 to 1979. He was the first leader of the country to be born and raised there. His leadership was defined by a struggle over how the country should be governed. He led a government that represented the white minority population. This government fought to maintain power against the demands of the black majority. His era was marked by international isolation and a long period of conflict.

This was a small mining and farming town in the Midlands of Southern Rhodesia. His parents, Jock and Agnes Smith, were British settlers. His father was a successful rancher, butcher, and miner. Smith grew up in a community that felt very connected to British identity. He attended school in Selukwe and later at Chaplin School in Gwelo. He eventually studied at Rhodes University College in South Africa. There, he studied commerce and even coached the university rowing crew.

He joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) in September 1941. While serving in Egypt in October 1943, he experienced a serious plane crash. A malfunction in his Hurricane aircraft caused him to crash during takeoff. The accident resulted in broken bones and permanent facial disfigurements. Doctors used skin grafts and plastic surgery to rebuild his face. In 1944, he was shot down over northern Italy. He spent three months working with Italian partisans to sabotage German forces. He eventually hiked across the snowy Maritime Alps to reach Allied troops.

He established a farm in his hometown in 1948. That same year, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Selukwe. He moved through different political parties during his early career. He originally joined the Liberal Party before moving to the United Federal Party in 1953. In 1961, he left that party to protest a new constitution. He then helped found the Rhodesian Front in 1962. This new party won the December 1962 election, making Smith the deputy prime minister.

His government faced a major crisis regarding independence and majority rule. The United Kingdom required the implementation of majority rule for independence. Smith and his Cabinet disagreed with these requirements. On November 11, 1965, they issued a Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI).

This act was done without permission from the British government. This decision led to the Rhodesian Bush War. The war involved the Rhodesian Security Forces and various African nationalist groups. These groups included ZANU and ZAPU, which received funding from the Soviet Union and China.

For fifteen years, the country faced intense international pressure.

Other nations applied economic sanctions to isolate the Rhodesian government. These sanctions were designed to restrict trade and weaken the economy. Smith's government also faced declining support from South Africa. During the conflict, Smith held four election victories. However, his support came only from the white minority. The black majority of the population was disenfranchised under the electoral system. In 1970, Rhodesia cut all remaining ties to Britain and became a republic. Eventually, the pressure of the war and the economy forced a change.

In 1978, Smith signed the Internal Settlement with moderate leaders.

One of these leaders was Bishop Abel Muzorewa. This agreement did not include the major groups ZANU or ZAPU. The new order did not receive international recognition, so the war continued. Smith eventually participated in the Lancaster House negotiations. These talks helped lead to free elections in 1980. This resulted in the recognition of the independent nation of Zimbabwe. Following this, Smith served as the Leader of the Opposition for seven years. He remained a critic of the new government led by Robert Mugabe.

Ian Smith died in 2007 at the age of 88. His life and political choices remain a subject of deep division. Supporters view him as a leader who provided stability. They believe he was a defender against the spread of communism. Critics view him very differently. They describe him as a leader of a white supremacist government. They argue his policies caused great suffering for millions of Zimbabweans. His legacy is tied to the complex history of racial inequality in the region.
