He was a Cuban politician and revolutionary leader. Castro led Cuba for nearly five decades. He served as prime minister from 1959 to 1976. He then served as president from 1976 to 2008. His leadership turned Cuba into a one-party communist state. This changed the political and economic landscape of the Western Hemisphere. His rule remains a subject of intense global debate today.

Castro's political journey began with his studies in law.

He studied at the University of Havana starting in 1945. During this time, he became active in student politics. He adopted Marxist–Leninist and nationalist ideas. Marxism–Leninism is a political theory focused on social equality and state control. Castro also became an anti-imperialist. This means he opposed the influence of powerful nations over smaller ones. He grew critical of corruption within the Cuban government.

His path to revolution involved several high-stakes attempts to change the government.

In 1953, he led an attack on the Moncada Barracks. This military garrison was located near Santiago de Cuba. The attack failed, and Castro was imprisoned for one year. After his release, he traveled to Mexico. There, he formed the 26th of July Movement. He worked with his brother Raúl Castro and Ernesto "Che" Guevara.
