Castro's path to power began with a fight for change. He was born in 1926 to a wealthy farmer. As a student, he studied law at the University of Havana. This attack on the Moncada Barracks did not work. He was sent to prison for a year after that.
After prison, Castro moved to Mexico to plan a new start. 
Once in power, Castro made Cuba a communist state. 


Castro stayed in power until 2008. He was the longest-serving leader of his kind in a long time. He helped other countries and led the Non-Aligned Movement. Even after the Soviet Union fell apart, he led Cuba through hard economic times. In 2006, he gave his job to his brother Raúl. Fidel Castro died in November 2016 at the age of 90. His life remains a major part of history for many people.

He worked with his brother Raúl Castro and Ernesto "Che" Guevara. 
After the revolution, Castro implemented massive social and economic changes. 
Castro's leadership caused significant tension with the United States. 
On the global stage, Castro was a very active leader. 
Even after the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, Castro continued to lead.
