Guevara rose to become a second-in-command during the fighting. He played a pivotal role in a two-year guerrilla campaign. This campaign successfully deposed the Batista regime and established a new government. This period of intense conflict is known as the Cuban Revolution.

After the revolution, Guevara took on several high-level roles in the new Cuban government. He served as the Minister of Industries and the president of the National Bank. He also helped lead a successful literacy campaign to teach people to read. As a diplomat, he traveled the world to represent Cuban socialism. He was involved in training the militia that repelled the Bay of Pigs Invasion. He also helped bring Soviet nuclear missiles to Cuba. This decision helped trigger the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

His political ideology was rooted in Marxism-Leninism. He believed that the underdevelopment of the Third World was caused by imperialism and monopoly capitalism. He argued that the inflow of capital from developed nations created economic dependence. This happened through unfair loans and technological subordination. He believed the only way to fix this was through world revolution and proletarism. He wanted to create a "new man" driven by moral values rather than material wealth.

In 1965, Guevara left Cuba to spread his revolutionary ideas to other continents.

Others criticize him as an authoritarian who endorsed violence against his opponents. Despite these disagreements, his influence is undeniable. Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century. His portrait, taken by Alberto Korda, is considered one of the most famous photographs in the world. His image remains a global symbol of rebellion and leftist movements.
