Charles Stewart Parnell was a powerful leader in Irish politics.

He was born in 1846 at Avondale House in County Wicklow. His family was very wealthy and held much land in Ireland. His father was John Henry Parnell and his mother was Delia Tudor Stewart. As a young man, Parnell learned how to lead. He studied at Magdalene College in Cambridge for a few years. He also traveled to the United States in 1871 with his brother. In 1875, he was elected to the House of Commons for Meath. He was a member of the Home Rule League. This group wanted Ireland to have more control over its own rules. By 1885, Parnell held a very important position in the government. After the general election, his party held the balance of power. This meant the two main parties needed his support to make decisions. He worked with William Gladstone and the Liberal Party on Home Rule. His reputation was very high during this time. However, things changed in 1890 when people learned about his relationship with Katherine O'Shea. This caused a big split in his political party.
