He was born in 1797 in a place called Głuszyna. This area was part of the Polish territory held by Prussia at that time. Strzelecki grew up in a family of Polish nobility. He even served a short time in the Prussian Army. However, he left the military because he did not like the strict rules. He spent his younger years traveling through Austria and Italy.

Strzelecki was a scientist who studied geology. Geology is the study of rocks and how the Earth is made. He did not go to school for this, so he taught himself. He traveled to North America to study soil and minerals. In 1836, he visited South America and traveled from Chile to California. He also went to places like Cuba, Tahiti, and New Zealand.

In 1839, he arrived in Australia. He wanted to learn about the minerals found there. He even found gold and silver near Wellington in New South Wales. He sent these samples to famous scientists in London and Berlin.

One of his greatest feats happened in the Australian Alps. In 1840, he climbed the highest mountain on the Australian mainland. He named this peak Mount Kosciuszko. He chose this name to honor Tadeusz Kościuszko, a hero from Poland.

During his travels, he also explored the Snowy Mountains. He traveled through a place he named Gippsland. His group had a very hard time during this trip. They had to leave their horses and samples behind. They spent 22 days nearly starving. An Aboriginal guide named Charlie saved them by hunting native animals. They finally reached Melbourne in May 1840.

Strzelecki was also a very helpful person during a tragedy. In 1847, a great famine happened in Ireland. This meant there was not enough food for people to eat. Strzelecki worked for the British Relief Association to help. He was in charge of giving out supplies in several counties. He had a smart idea to feed hungry children through schools.

At one point, he helped feed about 200,000 children. This work helped keep them safe from hunger and disease. He even worked while he was sick with typhoid fever.

Today, many things are named after this famous explorer. In Australia, there are the Strzelecki Ranges and a Strzelecki Highway. There is even a Strzelecki Desert in South Australia. He wrote a famous book about New South Wales in 1845. This book helped people understand the land much better. He received many honors, like the Founder's Medal from the Royal Geographical Society. He died in London in 1873. Later, his remains were moved back to his hometown of Poznań in Poland. His life shows how science and kindness can change the world.
