Lachlan River

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Lachlan River is a very special river in New South Wales, Australia. It is part of a huge area called the Murray-Darling basin. This river is unique because it has many wetlands along its whole length. Most rivers only have these wet areas near the end, but the Lachlan has them all along the way. It includes nine very important wetlands and lakes like Lake Cowal-Wilbertroy and Lake Brewster.

The river only connects to the rest of the basin when the waters are in flood.

The river starts on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range. It begins where Hannans Creek and Mutmutbilly Creek meet near Gunning. From there, the water flows north, west, and south-west. It is joined by thirty-seven other rivers, such as the Abercrombie and the Belubula. The river flows downhill as it moves toward its end. Finally, it reaches the Great Cumbung swamp near a place called Oxley.

This land has been the home of the Wiradjuri Aboriginal people for a long time. They live along the Lachlan, the Macquarie, and the Murrumbidgee rivers. In 1815, George William Evans visited the river and gave it its name. He named it after Lachlan Macquarie, who was a governor. Later, in 1817, John Oxley explored much of the river. People once called the southern part the Fish River, but they changed the name later.

The water in the Lachlan does not always flow at the same speed. Sometimes the river is very dry and stops flowing for over a year. In 1944, the river did not flow at all for a full year. Other times, the river has very large floods. At the town of Forbes, the river has flooded every seven years since 1887. In 1952, a massive flood hit the Forbes Iron Bridge. During that time, more than 900 families had to leave their homes.

Many people rely on the river for their lives and work. More than 100,000 people live within the river catchment area. About 12 percent of all agricultural businesses in the state are located here. The river is even part of famous stories and songs. You can find it mentioned in the poem Clancy of the Overflow. It is also in the folk song Streets of Forbes.
