It is a vital part of the Murray–Darling basin. This basin covers about one-seventh of the Australian continent. The river system is essential for the country's most important irrigated region. It drains the western side of the Australian Alps. From there, it meanders across inland plains toward the sea.

Water flows through a complex network of tributaries and channels. The Murray receives water from several large rivers. These include the Murrumbidgee, Darling, Lachlan, Warrego, and Paroo Rivers. The confluence of these rivers creates a massive drainage system.

The river's path is not always straight. At Morgan, it turns south toward its final destination. It reaches the eastern edge of Lake Alexandrina. This lake has water that fluctuates in salinity, or salt levels. The water then moves through channels near Hindmarsh and Mundoo Islands. Finally, it empties into Encounter Bay through the Murray Mouth.

Geological changes have shaped the river over millions of years. Between 2.5 and 0.5 million years ago, the river ended in Lake Bungunnia. This was a massive freshwater lake. It reached as far north as the Menindee Lakes. The lake drained approximately 600,000 years ago. This event likely marked the end of a wet phase. It led to the arid conditions seen in the basin today. Deep clays from this lake are still visible in cliffs near Chowilla.

Another major change occurred about 25,000 years ago due to the Cadell Fault. This fault is a displacement in the earth's crust. It raised an eastern edge, creating a north-south line. This movement diverted the river's path. The Murray began flowing around the fault. This created the Edward River channel. It also created "The Barmah Choke" and "The Narrows." These are places where the river channel is unusually narrow. These conditions allow the river to flood low-lying country regularly. This flooding created the famous Barmah river red gum forests.

Human history and legal boundaries are also tied to the river. The river forms a border between New South Wales and Victoria. However, the border is at the top of the Victorian bank. This means the water and the riverbed belong to New South Wales. This specific definition caused a long-running boundary dispute in the 1840s. A survey error of 3.72 kilometers led to this confusion. West of 141°E, the border moves to the middle of the river. This separates Victoria and South Australia.

Many major settlements rely on the river for life. Albury-Wodonga is a large center with 89,007 people. Other notable towns include Mildura and Merbein, which has 35,451 residents. Murray Bridge has a population of 16,804.

Historically, paddle steamers were used for commerce. These vessels moved goods between Adelaide and river settlements. Today, the river is highly regulated. This regulation helps manage water for irrigation and towns. However, it also impacts the natural flow of the system.

The river supports a wide variety of native wildlife. You can find the Murray cod and golden perch in its waters.

Other animals include the Murray short-necked turtle and the platypus. The Murray crayfish is an endangered species. Scientists have worked to increase its numbers. However, the river faces challenges from extreme droughts. The river has dried up completely three times since official records began. At the Murray Mouth, dredging machines must work constantly. They move sand to prevent the mouth from silting up. This keeps the connection to the Southern Ocean open.
