It is the third-longest river in the country. The river flows through flat plains. It starts in New South Wales. Then it flows to meet the Murray River at Wentworth.

Indigenous people have lived here for a very long time. The Barkindji people call the river Baaka or Barka. They made stone fish traps in the water. These traps are over 40,000 years old. They are the oldest man-made things on Earth.

In the past, paddle steamers moved wool along the river. Many towns sit along the banks. These include Bourke, Wilcannia, and Menindee.

Today, the river is in poor health. It suffers from drought and pollution. Sometimes the river barely flows at all. When it is dry, the water gets very warm. This can cause many fish to die. This happened in 2019 and 2023. The river needs good care to stay healthy for the future.
