Cooper Creek is a river in Australia.

It flows through Queensland and South Australia. The river starts as two rivers. One is the Thomson. The other is the Barcoo. They flow into Cooper Creek. This is very rare in the world.

The creek is often dry. It is called an ephemeral river. This means it does not flow all the time. Most years, the water soaks into the ground. It may even dry up before it reaches Lake Eyre. But sometimes, it floods. This happens when it rains far away in eastern Queensland. In wet years, the water flows through big deserts. It can reach Lake Eyre at last.

Many people lived here for a long time. Aboriginal groups have lived in this area for over 20,000 years. They used the land for trade. They moved goods like shells and ochre. Later, settlers came to the area. They brought sheep and cattle to graze on the grass.

History happened here too. Two explorers named Burke and Wills died near the creek in 1861. One man, John King, survived with help from Aboriginal people.
