Cooper Creek

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Cooper Creek is a special river in Australia. It flows through the states of Queensland and South Australia. This river is part of the Lake Eyre basin. It is one of three major river systems in Queensland that flow there. Most of the time, the creek is dry. This is because it is an ephemeral river. That means it does not have water flowing all year long.

The river has a very interesting way of working. It starts as two different rivers in central Queensland. One river is called the Thomson. The other river is called the Barcoo. These two rivers flow into Cooper Creek. This is believed to be the only time in the world this happens. The water moves south through the Channel Country. It can flow through the Strzelecki, Sturt Stony, and Tirari Deserts. In very wet years, the water finally reaches Lake Eyre.

Many people have a long history with this land. Aboriginal Australians have lived here for over 20,000 years. More than 25 tribal groups lived in the Channel Country alone. They had a huge trade network. They moved goods like ochre, shells, and pituri from north to south. Later, settlers arrived in the area. They built homesteads like the one at Innamincka. By 1880, people brought many cattle and sheep to the land.

History also happened along these banks. In 1845, Charles Sturt named the river. He named it after Charles Cooper. In 1861, two explorers named Burke and Wills died here. A man named John King survived the trip. He survived because friendly Aboriginal people helped him. By 1900, the local population had dropped to 30 survivors. This was because of sicknesses like influenza and measles.

Today, the land is used for many things. Most of the basin is used for grazing sheep and cattle. The grass grows on natural grasslands. The soil is very fertile, but it is also very heavy. It tends to crack when the rain does not come. The rainfall in this area is very erratic. This means the rain does not fall at regular times. Because of this, people cannot use the land for growing crops.
