It sits on the Kamchatka Peninsula. The volcano stays active because of moving earth. One giant plate slides under another plate. This happens on the Pacific Ring of Fire. This movement makes the volcano work.

The volcano has been active for many thousands of years. Long ago, it let out large flows of lava. In 1890, it had its first known eruption. Hot lava came out of cracks in the side. In 1956, it had a very big blast. This blast made pyroclastic flows. These are fast clouds of hot ash and gas. It also made lahars. Lahars are flows of mud and water. In 2008, the volcano let out a big ash cloud. This was its first major eruption in 3,500 years. Scientists study Koryaksky closely. It is a Decade Volcano. This means it is a place worthy of study. It is near a place where many people live.
