A trench forms when one plate slides under another. This is called subduction. The Pacific plate slides under the Okhotsk plate. This movement makes volcanoes in the area. It also makes many islands. This place can cause the ground to shake. These shakes are called earthquakes. Many big earthquakes have happened here. Some were in Russia. Others were near Japan. A ship called the USS Tuscarora found the trench. It used a study of the ocean floor. The ship found a depth of 4,655 fathoms. This trench is part of a busy area of the sea.
