The Nankai Trough is a deep dip on the ocean floor.

It sits south of Japan. This area is a subduction zone. This means one plate of the Earth slides under another. The Philippine Sea plate slides under the Eurasian plate. This movement can cause big earthquakes.

Scientists say the plates move about 43 mm every year. This movement can be very powerful.

The trough is also a very hot place. Deep sediments act like a blanket. This blanket traps heat under the seafloor. Because it is so hot, the rocks change. For example, certain clays turn into a different kind of clay.

There is also a special kind of fuel here. It is called methane clathrate, or gas hydrates. These are gas bubbles trapped in ice-like shapes. They form when water and gas meet deep down.

These gas hydrates are found in sandy areas of the trough. Scientists study this area to learn about heat and life. They even drill deep into the floor to find out more.
