Philippine Sea plate

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A large piece of the ocean floor moves. We call this the Philippine Sea plate. It sits under the Philippine Sea. It is east of the Philippines. This plate is made of oceanic lithosphere. That is the hard outer layer of the Earth.

Many other plates meet this one. To the east, the Pacific plate goes under it. This happens at the Izu-Ogasawara Trench. To the west, it goes under the Philippine Mobile Belt. This happens at the Philippine Trench.

To the north, it meets the Okhotsk plate. Near Mount Fuji, three plates meet. These are the Philippine Sea, Amurian, and Okhotsk plates. To the south, it meets the Caroline and Bird's Head plates.

There is also a divergent boundary to the east. This is a place where plates move apart. It is between this plate and the small Mariana plate. The Mariana plate carries the Mariana Islands. The plate also meets Taiwan to the northwest. It meets the Yangtze plate too. All these movements shape the sea floor.
