The katana is a famous Japanese sword with a very distinct look.

It features a slender, curved blade that has only one sharp edge. The handle is quite long so that a person can use two hands to hold it. A metal guard called a tsuba sits between the blade and the handle. This guard can be shaped like a circle or a square.

Most katanas have a blade length of more than 60.6 centimeters. This is also known as more than 2 shaku in traditional Japanese measurements. Because they were so well-made, historians say they were some of the finest cutting weapons ever.

There are specific ways that people wear and use this sword. Samurai in feudal Japan wore the katana thrust through a belt called an obi. They wore it with the sharp edge facing upward.

This special way of wearing the sword allowed for a very quick draw. A person could draw the blade and strike in a single, smooth motion. This fast response is important in martial arts like iaido. This art focuses on the skill of drawing the sword quickly to respond to a sudden attack.

Long ago, the katana grew out of different types of blades. It likely started from a short sword or knife called a sasuga.

Lower-ranking samurai used the sasuga as a spare weapon while they fought on foot. During the Kamakura period, which lasted from 1185 to 1333, these blades gradually became longer. By the Muromachi period, they had fully become the katana we recognize today. Some old swords called tachi were even changed into katanas. This process is called suriage, where the root of the blade is cut and shortened.

History shows that the katana changed as the way people fought changed. In the 16th century, many people used bows, spears, or guns on the battlefield.

Because of this, the long tachi became less common. The katana became the main choice because it was easier to carry during group battles. During the Edo period, the katana became even more important as a symbol. It represented the authority and the spirit of the samurai.

They were even used as special gifts between lords and samurai. Some were even offered to the kami, or gods, in Shinto shrines.

Katanas have traveled far beyond the borders of Japan. By the 15th century, these swords were being exported to China and Korea.

In fact, Korean smiths even went to Japan to learn how to make them. At one point, at least 200,000 swords were shipped to Ming dynasty China. These swords were also sent to Thailand, where they were prized for both battle and art. Even the name has traveled, as the Portuguese used the word to mean a large knife.

Today, we still see the legacy of these blades in museums and martial arts.
