It has a curved, single-edged blade. The handle is long. This lets a person use two hands to hold it.

A katana has a guard called a tsuba. This part protects the hand. It can be round or square.

Samurai used these swords in feudal Japan. They wore them with the sharp edge facing up. This helped them draw the sword very fast. This skill is part of a martial art called iaido.

Long ago, many swords were different. One type was called a tachi. The tachi was more curved. It was worn with the edge facing down. Later, people changed old tachi into katanas. They did this by cutting the root of the blade. This way is called suriage.

Katanas were very important to samurai. They were symbols of power and spirit. People also gave them as special gifts. Some swords were even offered to gods in Shinto shrines. Even today, people study the skill of the makers. Many famous smiths, like Masamune, made great blades.
