Many people see it as a law of cause and effect. This means that what we do has consequences.

In many Indian religions, intent is very important. This means why you do something matters. Good intent and good deeds lead to good karma. This can bring happy results. Bad intent and bad deeds lead to bad karma. This can bring unhappy results.

Some thinkers say karma is like a habit. Our actions can shape our character.

Karma is often linked to the idea of rebirth. This is also called samsara. It is the cycle of being born again and again. People believe that karma affects the quality of future lives. Some traditions, like Hinduism, group karma into four types. These types include karma from the past and karma from the present.
