Many people see it as a law of cause and effect. This means that every choice someone makes has a consequence. Some thinkers believe karma is like a person's character. Our habits and how we act can shape who we are.

How does this law work in daily life? It is not just about what a person does. It is also about why they do it. This is called intent. If a person has good intent, they create good karma. Good deeds and good thoughts can lead to happy results.

On the other hand, bad intent and bad deeds create bad karma. These can lead to unhappy results later on. In some traditions, like Buddhism, doing something without bad intent might not even count as bad karma. It is seen as neutral instead.

History shows that many different groups have studied this idea. It is a central part of many Indian religions. These include Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. Some people also link it to Taoism.

In the ancient texts called the Vedas, the word referred to work and its results. Even the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad mentions how actions and intentions affect a person's life. While many people believe these ideas, some scholars say the meaning changes depending on which group you ask.

In Hinduism, there are four specific types of karma to know. First is Sanchita karma, which is the sum of all past actions. Second is Prarabdha karma, which is a part of that sum affecting your present life. Third is Agami karma, which is the karma you make through your actions right now. Finally, there is Kriyamana karma, which is immediate karma created in the moment.

These types help explain how the past and present connect.

Karma is often tied to the idea of rebirth, or samsara. This is the belief that life is a cycle of being born again and again. Many people believe that the quality of your next life depends on your karma. Good karma might lead to a happier rebirth. Bad karma might lead to a harder life.

It is important to note that karma is not the same as fate. Fate means things are decided for you. Karma is about the choices you make every single day.
