Kama (river)

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Kama is a very long river in Russia. It is also called the Chulman. It starts in the Udmurt Republic near Kuliga. The river flows northwest for a long way. Then it turns northeast. Later, it flows south and west through Perm Krai. It also goes through Tatarstan. The Kama meets the Volga river south of Kazan.

The Kama is a very powerful river. It is the longest left tributary of the Volga. It also has the most water flow of those rivers. In fact, the Kama has more water than the Volga where they meet. The Kama is lower than the Volga. This is why the Volga flows into the Kama.

Many other rivers flow into the Kama. These are called tributaries. Some big ones are the Belaya and the Vyatka. People have built dams on the river. These dams make large lakes called reservoirs. One is the Kama Reservoir near Perm. Another is the Votkinsk Reservoir. These help make power for people to use.
