Many smaller rivers join the Northern Dvina. One is the Vychegda. Another is the Vaga. The Pinega is also a large river that joins it.

Many towns sit along the river banks. These towns grew because the river was used for travel. Arkhangelsk is a big port city near the end of the river.

In the past, this river was a main way to trade. Merchants used it to move goods like fur. Later, people used it to move wood. In the summer, boats can travel the whole length of the river. There is even a canal that connects it to other waterways. This helps ships move between different parts of the country.
