It is the sixth longest river in Europe. Most of the river is in the Komi Republic. The northern part flows through the Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The river starts in the Ural Mountains. It flows south, then west, and then north. It ends at the Arctic Ocean.

The river flows through big, wild places. The Virgin Komi Forests are in the river basin. These are the largest virgin forests in Europe. There is also the Yugyd Va National Park nearby.

Many other rivers join the Pechora. The Ilych, the Usa, and the Izhma all flow into it. The river carries a lot of water. It is the third largest river in Europe for this.

In the past, people used the river to travel. They used it to reach northwest Siberia. Now, a railroad runs from Vorkuta to Moscow. Vorkuta is a large center for coal. The river also flows past the town of Pechora.
