It is the sixth-longest river in all of Europe. Most of the river sits inside the Komi Republic. The northern part of the water crosses into the Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The river basin is huge. It is about the same size as the country of Finland. This river is a major part of the land in Northwest Russia.

The river starts in the Ural Mountains. This area is part of the Pechora-Ilych Nature Reserve. From there, the water flows south and then turns west. Near a place called Yaksha, it turns north. Many other rivers join the Pechora along its path. The Ilych joins at Ust-Ilych. The Usa joins at Ust-Usa. The Izhma, Pizhma, and Tsilma also flow into it. Finally, the river flows into the Arctic Ocean.

The Pechora carries a huge amount of water. It ranks third in Europe for its yearly water discharge. This means it moves more water than many other big rivers. It is the third largest after the Volga and the Danube. Its flow is about three quarters the size of the Danube. It is also a bit larger than the Northern Dvina. It is the largest river with no dams in its basin outside of New Guinea.

Many special places sit near the river. The Virgin Komi Forests are in the basin. These are the largest virgin forests in Europe. The Yugyd Va National Park is also nearby. In the far northeast, the Usa River reaches the coal center of Vorkuta.

Before railroads, people used the river to travel to northwest Siberia. They used portage roads to move between different river basins. In the 1960s, people talked about building a Pechora–Kama Canal. They wanted to move water to the Kama River. No canal was ever built.

The river has even inspired famous stories. A writer named Mikhail Lermontov wrote a book in 1839. His main character was named Pechorin. This name came from the Pechora river. Today, people use a railroad to travel from Vorkuta to Moscow. This path goes southwest from the coal center. The river remains a very important part of the landscape.
