This was nearly triple the number of entries found in the sky atlas of Tycho Brahe. He also produced a star atlas called *Atlas Coelestis*. Because he wanted his data to be perfect, he refused to publish it until it was fully verified. This caution led to a famous conflict with Isaac Newton and Edmond Halley. In 1712, they published a pirated version of his data without his permission. Flamsteed was so upset that he gathered 300 of the 400 printed copies and burned them.
Throughout his career, Flamsteed made several significant astronomical observations. In December 1690, he made the first recorded sighting of the planet Uranus. At the time, he did not realize it was a planet and instead catalogued it as a star named '34 Tauri.' He also studied the movement of comets. In 1681, he proposed that two comets seen in 1680 were actually a single body. While Isaac Newton initially disagreed, he later accepted Flamsteed's theory. Flamsteed also used special eyepieces with a micrometer reticle to measure the diurnal parallax of Mars. This helped him estimate the distance to the planet.
One of Flamsteed's most mysterious observations occurred on August 16, 1680. He recorded a star called 3 Cassiopeiae. Later, historians suggested this might not have been a star at all. They proposed it could have been a supernova, which is a massive stellar explosion. Some believe he may have seen the event that created the remnant known as Cassiopeia A. However, because the timing and position do not match perfectly, some scientists think he may have simply recorded a known star in the wrong place.
Flamsteed's legacy continues to be recognized in the scientific community today. His wife, Margaret, helped publish his major works after his death in 1719. His star designations are still used by astronomers in certain editions of star catalogues. To honor his contributions, a crater on the Moon is named Flamsteed. An asteroid, 4987 Flamsteed, also carries his name. 
He is also remembered in his home country through various landmarks. Several schools in England bear his name. A blue plaque in Derby honors his connection to the area. Flamsteed is buried in the chancel of a church in Burstow, Surrey. A plaque marks his grave, serving as a final memorial to his life of discovery.
