During this time, he also observed a transit of Mercury. A transit occurs when a planet passes directly across the face of the Sun. Halley realized that observing a transit of Venus could help measure cosmic distances. By using trigonometry, scientists could determine the distances between Earth, Venus, and the Sun.
Halley's mathematical work changed our understanding of comets. In 1682, he observed a specific comet moving through space. He applied Isaac Newton's law of universal gravitation to the comet's path. In his 1705 work, *Synopsis of the Astronomy of Comets*, he calculated the comet's periodicity. This means he predicted how often it would return to our view. He predicted the comet would return in 1758. Although Halley died before this date, the comet did return as he expected. 
Beyond astronomy, Halley made significant contributions to Earth sciences. He conducted sailing expeditions starting in 1698 to study terrestrial magnetism. 
Halley was also an inventive engineer and a pioneer in several fields. In 1691, he constructed a diving bell for underwater exploration. This device used weighted barrels of air to replenish the atmosphere inside. Halley and five others used it to dive in the River Thames. They remained underwater for over an hour and a half during one test. He later improved the design to allow for over four hours of exposure. He also created a liquid-filled housing for magnetic compasses. This design helped stop the needle from wobbling or swinging too much.
His intellectual curiosity led him to explore many different theories. In 1692, he proposed a model of a hollow Earth. He suggested the planet had a shell about 500 miles thick. He imagined it had multiple inner shells and a central core. He believed these shells were separated by atmospheres and had their own magnetic poles. He even speculated that the aurora borealis was caused by escaping gases. In 1693, he applied mathematics to human populations. He analyzed data regarding age-at-death to help the government price life annuities. This work helped start the field of actuarial science.
Halley's life was marked by both great success and significant challenges. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society at only 22 years old.
