John used a large telescope to look at space. He named many moons. He named seven moons of Saturn. He also named four moons of Uranus. He even found new galaxies.

He was also the first to use the terms "negative" and "positive" to describe photographic prints. He invented the cyanotype process, which produces blue images and is known today as the blueprint. He also experimented with "phytotypes," which used vegetable juices as light-sensitive emulsions. In 1840, he created the first infrared image, or thermograph, by focusing solar rays onto carbon particles in alcohol. He also discovered that sodium thiosulfate, or "hypo," could be used as a fixer to make photographs permanent. 
In the realm of scientific philosophy, Herschel's 1831 work, *A Preliminary Discourse on the Study of Natural Philosophy*, was revolutionary. He argued for an inductive approach to science. This means scientists should use careful observations to find a single, unifying explanation for how nature works. He believed nature is governed by laws that are often difficult to express mathematically. This idea had a massive impact on the scientific community. Most notably, it deeply influenced Charles Darwin. Darwin even referred to Herschel as one of the greatest philosophers when discussing the "mystery of mysteries" regarding the origin of species.
Throughout his life, Herschel received many prestigious honors for his massive scientific output. He was a founding member of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1820 and served as its president three times. He won the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society twice, in 1826 and 1836. He also received the Copley Medal from the Royal Society in 1821 and again in 1847. His ability to master so many different fields helped build the foundation for modern science. From the way we name the moons to the way we take photographs, his legacy remains visible everywhere.
