Before he was a famous astronomer, Herschel was a highly skilled musician. He played the oboe, violin, harpsichord, and organ. He composed many musical works, including 24 symphonies and numerous concertos. In 1766, he became the organist of the Octagon Chapel in Bath. He even served as the director of public concerts there. His musical career was deeply connected to his life in Bath, where he shared a home with his sister, Caroline.

Herschel's transition to astronomy began with a deep curiosity about science. He studied books on optics and the principles of mechanics to learn how to build telescopes. He did not just buy tools; he manufactured them himself. To create the mirrors for his reflecting telescopes, he used speculum metal. He would spend up to 16 hours a day grinding and polishing these mirrors. He relied on the mechanical skills of his brother, Alexander, to help with these complex constructions. Through this intense labor, he created high-quality instruments that were used by astronomers across Europe.

A defining moment in scientific history occurred on March 13, 1781.

While observing the constellation Gemini, Herschel noticed a new object that appeared as a disk. He initially suspected it might be a comet or a stellar disk. However, after several weeks of verification with other astronomers, it was confirmed to be a new planet. This planet was eventually named Uranus. It was the first planet discovered since antiquity. This massive discovery brought Herschel instant fame and led King George III to appoint him as Court Astronomer.

Beyond finding planets, Herschel conducted extensive deep-sky surveys. He used his custom telescopes to investigate nebulae, which are clouds of gas and dust in space. In 1802, he published a catalogue containing 2,500 such objects. By 1820, his catalogues had grown to include 5,000 objects.

His powerful telescopes allowed him to see that many objects previously thought to be single nebulae were actually large clusters of stars. He also discovered several moons, including Titania and Oberon orbiting Uranus, and Enceladus and Mimas orbiting Saturn. These findings provided a much clearer map of our celestial neighborhood.

One of Herschel's most significant scientific contributions was his study of double stars. He searched for pairs of stars that appeared very close together. In 1782 and 1784, he presented catalogues of these systems to the Royal Society. He eventually discovered that many of these were not just two stars that looked close, but were actually "binary sidereal systems." This means the two stars are physically linked and orbit one another due to mutual gravitational attraction.

Herschel also pioneered the field of astronomical spectrophotometry. He used prisms and temperature-measuring equipment to study the wavelength distribution of stellar spectra. His ability to combine physics, mathematics, and observation allowed him to see parts of the universe that were previously invisible to humans.

The legacy of Frederick William Herschel is vast and continues to influence science today. He was the first President of the Royal Astronomical Society when it was founded in 1820. His scientific achievements were recognized with many honors, including being elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. His son, John Herschel, continued his father's astronomical work, ensuring the family's impact on science lasted for another generation.
