He eventually discovered that many of these were not just two stars that looked close, but were actually "binary sidereal systems." This means the two stars are physically linked and orbit one another due to mutual gravitational attraction. 
Herschel also pioneered the field of astronomical spectrophotometry. He used prisms and temperature-measuring equipment to study the wavelength distribution of stellar spectra. Through these investigations, he made the groundbreaking discovery of infrared radiation. This was a type of light that exists outside the visible spectrum. His ability to combine physics, mathematics, and observation allowed him to see parts of the universe that were previously invisible to humans.
The legacy of Frederick William Herschel is vast and continues to influence science today. He was the first President of the Royal Astronomical Society when it was founded in 1820.
