Frederick William Herschel was a man with many different talents.

He was a gifted composer who wrote 24 symphonies and many concertos. He also played the organ, the violin, and the harpsichord.

While he loved music, he became most famous for studying the stars. He was a German-British astronomer who changed how we see the universe. His hard work helped us find new planets and understand distant stars.

To study the sky, Herschel had to build his own tools. He learned how to make reflecting telescopes by studying books on optics.

He spent up to 16 hours a day grinding and polishing metal mirrors. This was a very hard job that required great skill. He often worked with his brother Alexander, who was a skilled craftsman.

By making his own telescopes, he could see much more clearly than others. He used these tools to search for double stars and distant objects.

Herschel's life took a big turn in 1781.

While he was looking at the constellation Gemini, he saw a new object. At first, he thought it might be a comet. After checking with other astronomers, he realized it was a new planet. This planet was named Uranus. It was the first planet found since ancient times. This discovery made him famous almost overnight. King George III even appointed him as the Court Astronomer.

He made many other important discoveries in space.

Herschel found many moons, including Titania and Oberon around Uranus. He also found Enceladus and Mimas around Saturn. He spent years making lists of nebulae, which are clouds of gas and dust. In 1802, he listed 2,500 objects, and by 1820, he found 5,000. He also discovered infrared radiation, which is a type of light we cannot see. He used a prism to find this hidden heat in stellar spectra.

His work connects to how we study space today.

He showed that many objects once called nebulae were actually clusters of stars. He also proved that many double stars are actually two stars orbiting each other. This idea is called a binary system. His discoveries provided the foundation for modern astronomy. Even his son, John Herschel, continued his important work. The place where they lived in Bath is now a museum.
