Johann Gottfried Galle was a German astronomer. 
In 1846, Galle made a big discovery. A man named Urbain Le Verrier sent him a letter. Le Verrier had used math to guess where a new planet was. He sent the location to Galle. On the same night he got the letter, Galle looked through his telescope. 
Galle found many other things in space. He found a dark ring around Saturn. He also found three new comets. He studied many things like meteors and the Earth's magnetic field. People named a crater on Mars after him. There is also an asteroid named after him. He lived to be 98 years old.

In 1846, Galle made a very important discovery. 
This discovery was a huge moment for science. It proved that math could predict where planets live. Le Verrier suggested the name Neptune for the new world. Even though Galle found it, he gave the credit to Le Verrier. Galle also found other things in space. In 1838, he saw a dark ring inside Saturn. Between 1839 and 1840, he found three new comets. He was a very busy and successful scientist.
Later in his life, Galle moved to a place called Breslau. 
Many things in space are named after Galle today. There is a crater on the Moon named for him. There is also a crater on Mars known as the "happy face" crater. An asteroid called 2097 Galle carries his name. Even the planet Neptune has a ring named after him. In his home country, a memorial plaque was put up in Wittenberg. His life shows how looking at the sky can reveal huge secrets.
Johann Gottfried Galle was a prominent German astronomer who changed our understanding of the solar system. 
Galle's career began with deep study in mathematics and physics. He attended the Gymnasium in Wittenberg and later studied at Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin. In 1835, he joined the Berlin Observatory as an assistant to Johann Franz Encke. During his sixteen years there, he used a Fraunhofer-refractor telescope. This instrument had a 9-inch aperture, which is the width of the lens that gathers light. 
The discovery of Neptune happened through a precise chain of mathematical reasoning and observation. A scientist named Urbain Le Verrier noticed strange movements, called perturbations, in the orbit of Uranus. These wobbles suggested that another large object was pulling on Uranus with its gravity. Le Verrier calculated the exact position where this unknown planet should be. He sent these coordinates to Galle in September 1846. Galle received the letter on the morning of September 23, 1846.
Working that very same night, Galle and his assistant, Heinrich Louis d'Arrest, searched the sky. They found an object of 8th magnitude, which describes how bright a star appears. This object was located only 1 degree away from Le Verrier's predicted position. Over the next two evenings, they measured a proper motion of 4 seconds of arc. This movement proved the object was a planet rather than a fixed star. Le Verrier later proposed the name Neptune for this new world. Despite his role, Galle often gave the credit for the discovery to Le Verrier.
After his time in Berlin, Galle held several important leadership roles. In 1847, he was named to succeed Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel as the Director of Königsberg Observatory. However, due to an intrigue led by Carl Gustav Jacob Jacobi, he withdrew his application in 1848. In 1851, he moved to Breslau to become the director of the local observatory. He also became a Professor of Astronomy at the Schlesischen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Breslau. He remained in Breslau for over 45 years and was even elected Rector for the 1875/76 academic year.
In Breslau, Galle expanded his research into many different areas of science. He worked on the exact determination of planetary orbits and calculated the paths of meteors. He also studied the height of aurorae, which are colorful lights in the sky. With the help of his son, he consolidated data for all 414 comets discovered up to 1894. His research also touched on climatology and the Earth's magnetic field. Throughout his long career, he published more than 200 scientific works.
Galle lived a remarkably long life, passing away in 1910 at the age of 98.
