Some people thought a new planet was hiding. They saw big planets move in odd ways. They thought a heavy planet pulled on them. This pull is called gravity.

One man searched for a planet called Planet X. He looked very hard. He did not find it. But later, a man found Pluto!

Pluto is very small. It is not big enough to pull on giant planets. Now, scientists look for something else. They call it Planet Nine.

This new planet might be very large. It might be far away from the sun. It is a big mystery in space!

People thought this meant Planet X was real.

Later, scientists learned Pluto was too small. It could not pull on the giant planets. In 2006, Pluto was called a dwarf planet. This means it is much smaller than a regular planet.

Now, astronomers think a new planet might exist. They call it Planet Nine. It might be a super-Earth or an ice giant. This would be a planet much larger than Earth. It may stay very far from the Sun.

They noticed that the giant planets were moving in strange ways. Scientists thought the gravity of a hidden planet might be pulling on them. Gravity is the force that pulls objects toward one another. This pull can change how a planet moves in its path around the Sun. Because of these odd movements, many people believed a ninth planet was waiting to be found.

To find this mystery object, scientists looked at the orbits of other planets. They studied how planets like Uranus moved through space. If a large object was nearby, its gravity would cause small bumps or changes in those paths. In 1846, Urbain Le Verrier used math to predict where a new planet might be. He sent his notes to Johann Galle, who found Neptune exactly where the math said it would be.

Later, researchers used cameras to take many photos of the dark sky. They looked at these photos very closely to see if a tiny dot moved between them.

Many people tried to find this distant world throughout history. Percival Lowell started a big search in 1906 at his observatory in Arizona.

He called his target Planet X. He spent years looking at photos with a magnifying glass. In 1930, Clyde Tombaugh finally discovered Pluto. At first, people thought this meant Lowell was right about Planet X. However, scientists later found that Pluto was much too small to pull on the giant planets. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union decided Pluto should be called a dwarf planet instead.

There are many interesting facts about these distant searches. In 1848, Jacques Babinet suggested a planet named Hyperion might exist 48 AU from the Sun. AU is a way to measure how far things are from the Sun. In 1915, Lowell estimated Planet X was seven times the mass of Earth. Today, we know that a Saturn-sized object cannot exist out to 10,000 AU.

Astronomers also use the WISE telescope to rule out huge planets in the far reaches of space. These numbers help scientists narrow down where to look next.

Even though Pluto is a dwarf planet, the hunt for new worlds continues. Astronomers now think a new object called Planet Nine might be out there.

They think it could be a super-Earth or an ice giant. This would be a planet two to 15 times the mass of Earth. It might stay very far away, at least 200 AU from the Sun. Its path might be a stretched and tilted circle. This new idea comes from watching how other small, icy objects move in the outer Solar System.

For over a century, astronomers have searched for worlds beyond Neptune. This search began because of strange movements in the orbits of the giant planets. Scientists noticed that Uranus and Neptune did not move exactly as expected. They suspected the gravitational pull of an unseen planet was causing these irregularities. This concept of a hidden world has led to many different theories and names. From the hunt for "Planet X" to the modern search for "Planet Nine," the quest to understand the outer Solar System continues.

The process of finding these planets usually involves analyzing orbital perturbations. A perturbation is a disturbance in the regular motion of a planet. In the 1840s, mathematician Urbain Le Verrier used Newtonian mechanics to study these shifts. He calculated that a new planet's gravity was pulling on Uranus. He predicted the exact location of this object. When astronomer Johann Galle looked at the sky, he found Neptune exactly where the math predicted.

Many different scientists proposed various types of distant planets. In 1848, Jacques Babinet suggested a planet named "Hyperion" might exist. He estimated it had 12 Earth masses and orbited the Sun every 336 years at 48 AU. Later, Theodor Grigull proposed a Uranus-sized planet called "Hades" at 50 AU. Indian astronomer Venkatesh P. Ketakar even suggested planets named Brahma and Vishnu. He believed they were locked in a Laplace resonance, which is a specific mathematical pattern of orbital timing. While some of these ideas were wrong, they helped shape how we look at space.

The history of this search is filled with famous figures and dedicated observers. Percival Lowell founded the Lowell Observatory in Arizona in 1894. In 1906, he began a massive project to find "Planet X." He used a 5-inch photographic camera to take many exposures. He spent years examining these images with a magnifying glass. In 1930, Clyde Tombaugh finally discovered Pluto.

However, new data changed how we understand Pluto's significance. In 1978, scientists determined Pluto was too small to affect the giant planets. Its gravity was not strong enough to cause the orbital irregularities seen in Uranus. Furthermore, a study of Voyager 2 spacecraft measurements showed the orbital issues were actually due to a slight overestimation of Neptune's mass. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union reclassified Pluto as a dwarf planet. This left Neptune as the farthest known major planet in our Solar System.

Modern technology allows us to rule out certain types of distant worlds. Using the WISE telescope, astronomers have conducted large-scale surveys. As of March 2014, they ruled out any Saturn-sized objects, which have 95 Earth masses, out to 10,000 AU. They also ruled out Jupiter-sized objects, or roughly 318 Earth masses, out to 26,000 AU. These specific numbers help scientists focus their search on smaller, more distant possibilities.

Today, the search has shifted toward a new hypothesis called "Planet Nine." This idea arose from observing the orbits of extreme trans-Neptunian objects. These small, icy objects appear to cluster in strange ways. Astronomers suggest a super-Earth or ice giant might be responsible. This hypothetical planet could be 2 to 15 times the mass of Earth. It likely follows a highly inclined and eccentric orbit. Its path might take it as close as 200 AU and as far as 1,200 AU from the Sun.
