Flamsteed helped start the Royal Greenwich Observatory. He even laid its first stone. He spent forty years watching the sky. He made a huge list of stars. This list had 2,935 stars in it. It was much more detailed than older lists.

He made some great discoveries. He saw the planet Uranus. At the time, he thought it was a star. He also studied how comets move. He thought two comets were actually just one. Later, Isaac Newton agreed with him.

Flamsteed wanted his star lists to be perfect. He did not want to share them until they were ready. Because of this, others took his data without asking. They published a star list without his permission. This made him very upset. Even so, his hard work helped sailors find their way. Today, a crater on the Moon bears his name.
