The "Jewish question" was a major debate in Europe during the 1800s and 1900s. It was about the legal and social status of Jewish people. Many people wondered how a minority group should live within a larger society. This debate happened alongside other discussions about how nations were formed. It touched on many different topics like rights and citizenship. It was a very large and complicated subject for many years.

Different thinkers had many different ideas about how to solve these issues. Some people argued for assimilation, which means joining the local culture. Others suggested resettlement or moving people to different places. In 1843, a man named Bruno Bauer wrote about this in Germany. He thought Jews could only have rights in a secular state. A secular state is one that is not tied to one religion. Karl Marx wrote a reply to him in 1844. Marx argued that a secular state could still allow for private religion.

As time went on, the debate became much more harmful. Around 1860, some people began using the term in an antisemitic way. Antisemitism is a type of prejudice against Jewish people. These groups claimed that Jews were enemies within their own countries. People like Wilhelm Marr and Theodor Fritsch argued that integration was impossible. They wanted to remove Jews from jobs in education and the state. They also tried to stop people from marrying across different groups.

Jewish leaders also looked for ways to protect their people. Theodor Herzl wrote a famous paper in 1896 about Zionism. He believed Jewish people needed their own independent state. He suggested this state could be in a place called Palestine. This movement eventually led to the creation of Israel in 1948. In the United States, the debate also caused tension in politics. For example, President Ulysses S. Grant had to respond to concerns about Jews in Russia. In the 1920s, Henry Ford also used his magazine to spread unfair ideas.

The most terrible part of this history happened with the Nazi party. They took power in Germany in 1933 and used the term to justify harm. They created laws in 1935 called the Nuremberg Laws to take away citizenship. They also carried out the Holocaust during World War II. The Nazis called their plan the "Final Solution to the Jewish Question." This was a state-sponsored plan to kill Jewish people in Europe. It resulted in the deaths of millions of Jewish men, women, and children.
