He is often called the father of modern political Zionism. This means he worked to create a home for Jewish people. He wanted them to have their own state where they could be safe.

Herzl believed that having a country would help people practice their religion. It would also let them express their own culture freely. Because of his work, he is known as the spiritual father of the Jewish State.

Herzl's journey began with his own experiences in Europe.

He was born in Pest, which is now part of Hungary. As a young man, he studied law at the University of Vienna. He later became a journalist and wrote for a newspaper called Neue Freie Presse. He also wrote plays and poems during his life. At first, he did not focus on Jewish politics in his writing. He mostly wrote about descriptive things and literature.

Many things changed how Herzl saw the world.

He saw many people being unfair to Jews in Europe. This unfairness is called antisemitism. He saw this happen in Vienna and also in France. In France, a Jewish officer named Alfred Dreyfus was treated very poorly. Herzl saw crowds of people shouting mean things during these events. These moments made him realize that Jewish people needed a safe place of their own. He decided that the only way to avoid this unfairness was to build a nation.

Herzl took many big steps to share his ideas.

In 1896, he published a famous pamphlet called "The Jewish State." This book explained his vision for a Jewish homeland in Palestine. His ideas quickly gained attention all over the world. In 1897, he organized the First Zionist Congress in Basel, Switzerland. He was chosen to be the president of the Zionist Organization. He even tried to talk with leaders like the German emperor and the Ottoman sultan.
