Zionism is a movement about national identity. It is a type of ethnocultural nationalism. This means a group shares a common history and culture. These groups feel a strong need to keep their culture alive. They also want political rights to rule themselves. Zionism started in Europe during the late 1800s.

It was a response to new waves of antisemitism. It was also linked to the Jewish Enlightenment, or Haskalah. The goal was to build a Jewish homeland in Palestine. This area is often called the Land of Israel in Judaism.

Many people worked to make this movement grow. The name "Zion" comes from Mount Zion in Jerusalem. This name has been used in the Hebrew Bible for a long time. In 1862, Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Kalischer wrote a book called Seeking Zion. This was a very early text that asked Jews to move to Palestine. Later, the "Lovers of Zion" group met in 1884.

In 1890, Nathan Birnbaum used the word "Zionism" for the first time. He wanted to help Jewish people find a national rebirth. He even started a group to help people move to the land.

One leader named Theodor Herzl made the movement very famous. He wrote a famous pamphlet in 1896. He wanted to create an independent Jewish state in the 20th century.

He held the First Zionist Congress in 1897. This meeting helped create the Zionist Organization. At first, some people thought about other places for a home. They looked at Africa or the Americas. But in 1905, most people voted to settle in Palestine instead. This choice made Palestine the main focus for the movement.

History shows many big changes in the region. In 1917, the Balfour Declaration showed that Britain supported Zionism. In 1922, Britain ruled the area under a Mandate. This rule gave more rights to Jewish settlers than to the local Arabs.

In 1948, the State of Israel declared its independence. This led to a war that changed the borders. Israel grew to control over 78% of the former Mandate land. During this time, many Palestinians had to leave. About 160,000 out of 870,000 Palestinians stayed in the new state.

People today have different views on Zionism. Some see it as a movement for national liberation. They believe it helped an indigenous people return to their ancestral home. Others see it as a colonialist or racist movement. Within the movement, there are many different types of Zionism. There are Liberal, Labor, and Revisionist groups. There is also Religious Zionism, which mixes nationalism with religion.

These different ideas show how complex the history of the land remains.
