He is recognized as the father of modern political Zionism. This movement aimed to establish a Jewish state. Herzl believed this was necessary for Jewish safety and cultural freedom. He founded the Zionist Organization to organize this effort. Today, he is called the "spiritual father of the Jewish State." His name appears in the Israeli Declaration of Independence.

Herzl was born on May 2, 1860, in Pest. At that time, Pest was part of the Kingdom of Hungary. He grew up in a prosperous Neolog Jewish family. His father, Jakob, was a successful businessman.

As a young man, Herzl studied law at the University of Vienna. He initially joined a German nationalist fraternity called Albia. However, he resigned from the group because of its antisemitism. He later moved away from law to pursue journalism and literature. He worked as a correspondent for the newspaper Neue Freie Presse. He also wrote several plays for the Viennese stage.

Herzl's views changed because of the antisemitism he witnessed in Europe. Antisemitism is prejudice or hostility directed toward Jewish people. While working in Paris, he followed the Dreyfus affair. This was a political scandal involving Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish French army captain. Dreyfus was falsely convicted of spying for Germany. Herzl witnessed mass rallies in Paris following the trial. He reported hearing crowds shout, "Death to the Jews!"

Some scholars debate how much this specific event changed him. Others suggest the rise of Karl Lueger in Vienna was more influential. Regardless, Herzl concluded that antisemitism could not be cured. He believed Jews needed to move away from Europe to find security.

In 1896, Herzl published a pamphlet titled "Der Judenstaat," or "The Jewish State."

In this work, he argued that Jews possessed a distinct nationality. He believed they lacked only a nation and a state of their own. He proposed that Palestine should be this homeland. His ideas spread quickly and gained international attention. In 1897, he organized the First Zionist Congress in Basel, Switzerland.

At this meeting, he was elected president of the Zionist Organization. This established a formal political structure for the movement.

Herzl used diplomacy to try and build support for his goals. He reached out to powerful world leaders to discuss a Jewish state. These efforts included appeals to German emperor Wilhelm II. He also attempted to negotiate with Ottoman sultan Abdul Hamid II. These diplomatic missions were ultimately unsuccessful. Later, during the Sixth Zionist Congress in 1903, he presented the Uganda Scheme.

This proposal suggested a temporary refuge in British East Africa. It was a response to the Kishinev pogrom. However, the plan faced strong opposition and was rejected by the movement.

Herzl's life ended relatively early. He died of a heart ailment on July 3, 1904. He was only 44 years old at the time of his death. He was originally buried in Vienna, Austria-Hungary.

Many years later, in 1949, his remains were moved to Israel. He was reinterred on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.

Herzl's impact connects to many different fields of study. His life is studied in history to understand the rise of nationalism. His writings are analyzed in political science and sociology. His transition from an assimilationist to a Zionist is a key study in identity. He moved from wanting to integrate into European culture to seeking a separate national identity. His efforts show how journalism and diplomacy can drive large social movements. He remains a central figure in understanding the modern history of the Middle East and Jewish political thought.
