He was a brilliant biochemist and a major leader in the Zionist movement. This movement sought to establish a Jewish homeland. Weizmann is often called the "father of industrial fermentation." This title recognizes his work using bacteria to create useful chemicals. He also served as the first president of the State of Israel.

Weizmann's scientific breakthrough involved a process called fermentation. Fermentation is when tiny living things, like bacteria, change one substance into another. He used a specific bacterium named *Clostridium acetobutylicum*. This organism is sometimes called the "Weizmann organism." Through this bacterium, he could produce acetone, n-butanol, and ethanol. Acetone is a chemical liquid used in many industrial ways.

This discovery became vital during World War I. The British war industry needed acetone to make cordite. Cordite is an explosive propellant used in weapons. To produce acetone on a large scale, scientists used starch. When maize supplies were too low, people even collected horse-chestnuts to provide the necessary starch. This industrial process helped the Allied war effort significantly. Because of this, Weizmann gained access to high-ranking British leaders.

Weizmann's life began in 1874 in Motal. At that time, Motal was part of the Russian Empire. He was the third of 15 children born to Oizer and Rachel Weizmann. He studied Hebrew and science in a traditional school called a cheder. Later, he moved to Germany and Switzerland to study chemistry. He earned his PhD in organic chemistry in 1899. He eventually moved to the United Kingdom to teach at the University of Manchester.

As a political leader, Weizmann was incredibly active. He helped secure the Balfour Declaration in 1917. This was a formal statement supporting a Jewish homeland. He also convinced the United States to recognize the new State of Israel in 1948. On February 16, 1949, he was elected as the first president of Israel. He held this office until his death in 1952.

Weizmann believed science could bring peace and prosperity. He wanted to use research to build a new life in the land. In 1934, he helped create the Daniel Sieff Research Institute in Rehovot. This institute was later renamed the Weizmann Institute of Science to honor him. He also helped establish the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His family was also involved in science; his sister Anna was a chemist who held several patents.

His life was connected to many global events and people. He was a British citizen from 1910 until 1948. During World War II, he advised the British Ministry of Supply on synthetic rubber. His family experienced the complexities of the era as well. His son Michael was a pilot in the Royal Air Force who died in 1942. His nephew, Ezer Weizman, also became a president of Israel. Weizmann is buried in the garden of his home at the Weizmann Institute.
