He was a famous biochemist and a key leader for the Zionist movement. This movement worked to create a home for Jewish people. Weizmann is often called the father of industrial fermentation. This means he found ways to use tiny living things to make useful materials. His work helped build new schools and even a whole new country.

His scientific work focused on a process called fermentation. He used a specific bacterium to produce a substance called acetone. Acetone is a liquid that can be used in many different ways. During World War I, this discovery became very important for the British war industry. It helped them make cordite, which is a type of explosive propellant. To make enough of it, people even collected horse-chestnuts to use for starch. This showed how science can solve very big, real-world problems.

Weizmann's life began in 1874 in the village of Motal. At that time, Motal was part of the Russian Empire. He was the third child in a very large family of 15 children. He grew up studying Hebrew and science in school. Later, he moved to Germany and Switzerland to study chemistry. He earned a PhD in organic chemistry in 1899. These years of study helped him become a great scientist.

As a leader, Weizmann worked hard to help his people. In 1917, he helped obtain the Balfour Declaration. This was a very important document for the Zionist cause. He also worked to make sure the United States recognized the State of Israel in 1948. In 1949, he was elected as the very first president of Israel. He held this important job until he died in 1952.

Weizmann believed that science could bring peace and prosperity. He helped start the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He also founded the Daniel Sieff Research Institute in Rehovot. This institute was later renamed the Weizmann Institute of Science to honor him. He wanted science to help create a new life for the land. Today, his work in chemistry and his work in leadership are still remembered.
