For a long time, people in Europe had a big debate. They called it the "Jewish question." This debate was about how to treat Jewish people. It was about their rights and their place in society.

In the 1800s, many people wrote about this topic. Some wanted Jewish people to join in local culture. This is called assimilation. Other people were not kind. They used the term to treat Jewish people as enemies. They wanted to take away their power and their jobs.

Some Jewish leaders had new ideas too. Theodor Herzl wanted a safe home for Jewish people. He helped start the idea of Zionism. This led to the state of Israel in 1948.

Sadly, the debate became very dark. In the 1930s, the Nazi party took power in Germany. They used the term to plan terrible things. They carried out the Holocaust. This was a plan to kill Jewish people in Europe. It was a very sad time in history. Many people lost their lives during this period.
